While previous research on interest groups’ (IGs) relations to MPs has mainly focused on informal lobbying strategies or interorganizational linkages, the analysis of formal ties between MPs and IGs has remained neglected. For a long time, the European Parliament (EP) was viewed as a lobbying sideshow mainly to be targeted if interest groups were unsuccessful at getting their demands included in the European Commission’s proposal. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have a reputation for being particularly open to diffuse interests who, due to their limited resources, use ‘friendly’ MEPs to put. The two studies in Interest Groups and Elections in Canada explore the nature and influence of special interest groups. They consider different aspects of the question, "In the context of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, how can the laws intended to secure a fair electoral process be reconciled with freedom of expression?". Janet Hiebert reviews the limits on interest groups.

Chapter 7 shifts the focus from the policy formulation to the decision-making stage of the European policy-making process in which the Council, the European Parliament, and the European Commission bargain about the design of the final legislative act. The chapter first briefly summarizes the decision-making process in the European Union. Afterwards, multilevel regression analyses are presented. Due to the Covid pandemic the MEP Interest Group meetings planned for March and June have been postponed. These will be replaced by one larger, all day meeting on November 10th in Brussels (date to be confirmed). Here, the three thematic focus areas of the Interest Group (stigma, access and empowerment) will be discussed.
